Step One For New Members

If you are reading this, you are in the main forum....where all the good discussion and exchange of ideas occurs.

Instructional threads are 'stickied' to the top of this forum page in an effort to get new members to see the work that gets done here. There are 5 different threads of a dad and his kid, going through the HittingIllustrated process. They are quite instructional. I think you'll be impressed with what you see. The kid's progress is amazing. One of them is now a D1 player who chose college after being drafted. Another is a DII college player. A third is his brother who is now in high school. The fourth is a current high school freshman. And the fifth is my son who is now out of college and playing amateur fastpitch softball. Take a look. The terminology is likely to confuse you at first. But do your best to understand.

Then, there is another forum titled The Second Engine, found just below this one on the main page, which consists of 18 threads that have been chosen as 'good reads' for new members to get 'up to snuff' on what is taught here.

It is my recommendation that you spend your first hour or so in that forum reading those threads. Then, come here to ask questions. We love it when clips of hitters are posted.

And here is a link to an Instructional Starter Pak. It has the basic information. There are many details that go with each step that are too cumbersome to put in the Pak.

I'LL GIVE YOU AN ANALYSIS AND A RECOMMENDATION.

If I were you, I'd concentrate on figuring out what the Hand Pivot Point and what the Rear Hip Pivot Point are....and how they are synced together to create the high level swing.

Welcome.

I think he might have spun a tire coming off the line but, yeah, he can go.

I didn't realize how up it was until I saw video. And he says he likes it down. Probably should've laid off!

      • The adjustability of a barrel turned into a rearward arc is special.

Understanding that the unload is a continuation of the load is like cheating.

        No back then forward.

No start then stop then start again.

        No direct then launch.

A circle simply continues on around.

Something else that I think is relevant -- relative? -- to those points is... Matt is not at all impressed by high-80s velo. When we were talking about facing a hard thrower prior to this game he literally said, "Dad, 85 is like nothing now." LOL. Not the clearest language but I know what he was saying. And he can say it -- and believe it; know it -- because of the points above.

His original post, and your response, to Teacherman's "continuing circle" comments, are two of the greatest posts in the illustrious history of this site!

Thanks, and continued success to your slugger!

Straight, unfiltered from the kid's mind. That's how the process enables him to feel.

Seriously, he's confident he can hit against any velo... He's actually said, "Dad, how much faster can 95 really be?" LMAO!

Success notwithstanding, these tools make him believe that he can turn around any speed that comes his way.

                      Great minds think alike!

My two kids have exclusively hit with Rip-Its for the last 4 years.

I have heard they are exiting the bat business. I hope not.

                      • I gotta say, he really couldn't care less about the brand. He does prefer good ol' 1-piece alloy, though -- suits me from a cost perspective :-) -- and balanced (and a few wraps of tape at the knob end of the handle to build up the flare). He was a 5150 guy before this (2012 32.5"). I picked up the Rip-It last fall mostly because I'd heard a lot about people loving the Prototype from the beginning -- other than it falling apart -- and it was a crazy bargain.

To me, I feel like the 5150 (the classic, not the Velo) is slightly more end-weighted in a 'just right' sort of way. Sweet spot may be a tad bigger on the Rip-It. The other 'balanced' 1-piece I'd be looking at if we were shopping now is the Cat6.

Once the summer comes, it's pretty much all wood -- mostly maple C271 profiles in 32 and 33 that weigh out around -2.

                        • I just ordered two new bats the other day from Marucci after breaking my JB19 model. I had been using that all last year, but decided to try something with a bigger barrel and a bit more end loaded now that things are becoming more fluid and quick. I'm still waiting for them to shop, but I will fill you in on if they make a difference one way or another.

                          • Found this interesting...

Stepping into the box, he did this (unusual)...

                            ...right before he did this...

As hard a ball as he's ever hit. 5 more degrees of launch angle and it'd still be going.

That's a good little reminder right before he takes a real swing...I see a lot of kids take really ugly swings on-deck or in between pitches...I'm like that's what you want to do right before you get in the box to hit???
