Step One For New Members

If you are reading this, you are in the main forum....where all the good discussion and exchange of ideas occurs.

Instructional threads are 'stickied' to the top of this forum page in an effort to get new members to see the work that gets done here. There are 5 different threads of a dad and his kid, going through the HittingIllustrated process. They are quite instructional. I think you'll be impressed with what you see. The kid's progress is amazing. One of them is now a D1 player who chose college after being drafted. Another is a DII college player. A third is his brother who is now in high school. The fourth is a current high school freshman. And the fifth is my son who is now out of college and playing amateur fastpitch softball. Take a look. The terminology is likely to confuse you at first. But do your best to understand.

Then, there is another forum titled The Second Engine, found just below this one on the main page, which consists of 18 threads that have been chosen as 'good reads' for new members to get 'up to snuff' on what is taught here.

It is my recommendation that you spend your first hour or so in that forum reading those threads. Then, come here to ask questions. We love it when clips of hitters are posted.

And here is a link to an Instructional Starter Pak. It has the basic information. There are many details that go with each step that are too cumbersome to put in the Pak.

I'LL GIVE YOU AN ANALYSIS AND A RECOMMENDATION.

If I were you, I'd concentrate on figuring out what the Hand Pivot Point and what the Rear Hip Pivot Point are....and how they are synced together to create the high level swing.

Welcome.

  • Rich,

Has Brandon started to hang onto the bat with both hands throughout his swing on his own?

Does he feel better doing that now?

    Comment

    • If you notice....he isn't tipped out over the plate in today's swings. The bat is more behind his head in his setup.

Scroll up a few posts to see the setup difference.

We are experimenting with each setup. I believe the one he is demonstrating today is better. I believe he likes the other one better.

With one his hand stays on the bat. With the other it comes off.

With the swing I like he hit 3 HR's in a doubleheader. With the swing he likes he hit one of the longest HR's ever hit on that field.

A trial and error search for which will produce more consistency.

      • It has been a long time....years....since we worked out and took video. I really miss those days. But he stopped by my place of business on his way to his game last night. I had told him about the Command Drill and asked for him to come by so I could video him doing it.

And OH.....what a revealing night it was.

Here is the Command Drill swing....

And here is a flow into the Command Drill swing....

And here is what we saw WAY too often....

Manny's more effective and continuous pull-backs off-set his momentum and resist his rotation and enable the longer 'down' aspect of his barrel launch and path.

Less effective pull-backs allow Brandon's trunk to rotate and barrel to go 'up' too soon. He 'pulls off the ball' in traditional terms. (Swinging from such an 'open' position only exacerbated the 'pulling off' top-slice)

                  • I will take a stab...

                    Little stretch...corner bled...push

The barrel doesn't get deep and the resulting path hits the top of the ball often.

                        • Torso isn't fused in the bad swing.
Barrel turn disconnected from scap pinch.

                          • I am seeing a difference in the hands and how they are decocking. Later in swing one, and early in swing two (cast?). Also, swing two around torso, swing one at side.
