Step One For New Members

If you are reading this, you are in the main forum....where all the good discussion and exchange of ideas occurs.

Instructional threads are 'stickied' to the top of this forum page in an effort to get new members to see the work that gets done here. There are 5 different threads of a dad and his kid, going through the HittingIllustrated process. They are quite instructional. I think you'll be impressed with what you see. The kid's progress is amazing. One of them is now a D1 player who chose college after being drafted. Another is a DII college player. A third is his brother who is now in high school. The fourth is a current high school freshman. And the fifth is my son who is now out of college and playing amateur fastpitch softball. Take a look. The terminology is likely to confuse you at first. But do your best to understand.

Then, there is another forum titled The Second Engine, found just below this one on the main page, which consists of 18 threads that have been chosen as 'good reads' for new members to get 'up to snuff' on what is taught here.

It is my recommendation that you spend your first hour or so in that forum reading those threads. Then, come here to ask questions. We love it when clips of hitters are posted.

And here is a link to an Instructional Starter Pak. It has the basic information. There are many details that go with each step that are too cumbersome to put in the Pak.

If I were you, I'd concentrate on figuring out what the Hand Pivot Point and what the Rear Hip Pivot Point are....and how they are synced together to create the high level swing.

So what am I sequencing and timing wrong? Am I stretching too early? I feel like I’m not stretching enough and getting around the corner or maybe I’m just not holding my stretch in my upper well enough. The second video made more sense I feel like I just need to try and duplicate the sequence he is showing in it

Yes do that, follow the video of Richard’s swing and you’ll discover how much you need to pull back and where. Richard is saying you have to pull back and around so that you feel it in the (groin ) hip socket. Start with that and see where it takes your swing. Doing that will also help you with the lateral tilt. I like your ability to assess your swing, keep up the good work it will payoff for you.

Really like the thought and feeling of the coil pulling at the groin. I got a much more around feeling and less of just back feeling. I feel more connected and that this flows better. Let me know what you think! Thanks! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=EcyhYpGRnfs

Two questions. Am I too much shoulder turn with coil/stretch or am I fine? Also should I now start trying to duplicate above into side toss, front toss and bp?

Feels weird. I’m having trouble holding my stretch and even like around in my upper I feel like. Here’s me in front toss and side toss. The past couple days I’ve been trying to duplicate judge but I’m feeling really weird with it right now. I’m really having trouble getting my stretch down. My upper is just not working right now. Any tips or advice in the right direction from anyone with tweaking my upper would be great. Seems like I’m only having this problem with a moving ball. You’re doing a lot right but you’re coiled into your rear leg instead of around it. Fix that and you’ll be darn close. Get one legged. Turn back back pocket to then pitcher to coil. Feel that your rear leg will be pulling instead of pushing. Bingo

Thanks so much TM. I appreciate everything. Is this around or still in. I’m trying to watch a bunch of video and trying to duplicate it and I tried watching one of your coil vids and duplicate. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=pdnAOpPi6qw

Yes. Much better. Now launch by tilting from max coil.

So I tried it off the tee today and my back leg is pushing a ton. Is my coil okay in this video? I think it is from a lack of tilt/hip slip? Is the tilt created from the hip slip? I know I need to work on that if you could point in the right direction. I want to get my coil down first tho. Is this coil around leg or just in it?! Thanks https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J5J4CTWa_Vg

You’re on the right track. Carry the load you get forward. Hold the lead leg up with your back. You’ll get to a point that you can no longer hold up the lead leg. Snap and tilt.

Tried holding load while I moved forward. Still just doesn’t look right when I put it next to good swings. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jGLpJH6Cg5g

Also here’s some tee, side toss and front toss trying to work on riding out and holding hip load. I’m thinking from watching myself is that I really need to work on my coil/stretch keeping myself in the phone booth. My heads flying forward and I was reading up on your one write up on Ryan Howard and how he stays in the phone booth. If I have the proper movements I should be able to keep myself in the phone booth. Also I need to work on my pick up I simply pick up instead of applying pressure into the ground to pick up and holding it with my back like you said. Whenever I try to duplicate the running start my head goes so I need to really pull back so I get the running start only in the knee while holding my back, hip and head. . https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=eO6hpVLh__E

Make sure everything you do is going to apply instant torque into the handle. Effort to unload the barrel first with handle torque will cause the body to burst. Try to get the barrel to the ball before the body moves. You won’t. But make that the goal.

Here I tried to hold back with my back muscles and get that running start. Feels weird. Any suggestions? Maybe need to work on my snap a little more. I felt it in my hip a lot with the running start feel I’m working on. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=XuJCx-JiUeQ
