Step One For New Members

If you are reading this, you are in the main forum....where all the good discussion and exchange of ideas occurs.

Instructional threads are 'stickied' to the top of this forum page in an effort to get new members to see the work that gets done here. There are 5 different threads of a dad and his kid, going through the HittingIllustrated process. They are quite instructional. I think you'll be impressed with what you see. The kid's progress is amazing. One of them is now a D1 player who chose college after being drafted. Another is a DII college player. A third is his brother who is now in high school. The fourth is a current high school freshman. And the fifth is my son who is now out of college and playing amateur fastpitch softball. Take a look. The terminology is likely to confuse you at first. But do your best to understand.

Then, there is another forum titled The Second Engine, found just below this one on the main page, which consists of 18 threads that have been chosen as 'good reads' for new members to get 'up to snuff' on what is taught here.

It is my recommendation that you spend your first hour or so in that forum reading those threads. Then, come here to ask questions. We love it when clips of hitters are posted.

And here is a link to an Instructional Starter Pak. It has the basic information. There are many details that go with each step that are too cumbersome to put in the Pak.

I'LL GIVE YOU AN ANALYSIS AND A RECOMMENDATION.

If I were you, I'd concentrate on figuring out what the Hand Pivot Point and what the Rear Hip Pivot Point are....and how they are synced together to create the high level swing.

Welcome.

  • Epstein talking about Hand Torque in Flattening the Hands

I was reading through an "Ask Me" article written by Mike Epstein for the Collegiate Baseball News titled, "Flat-Palm Hitting." I've been aware of Epstein's advice on quickly flattening the palms during the initial part of the swing, but I somehow missed the following about "hand torque"...

Mike Epstein writes "another torque is the result of the hitter quickly flattening out his hands as he launches the swing. The hands flatten as top hand pulls down and the bottom hand pulls up. These two diametrically-opposed forces work on the bat, producing torque. This also has an enhancing effect on bat speed and potential power, and is the result of the hands flattening out as the swing launches."

This article was written in 2002. I just don't recall him talking about hand torque, but I like it.

Correct where I think some Epstein guys take it to extreme is wanting it completely flat before bringing it through.

I liked Richard's mantra a couple of weeks back that said torquing the barrel is the swing. Sure the initial rearward arc, you want your hands still around the arm pit, however you don't need to completely flatten then come into the zone.

I'll have to go back and look at the deltoid drill again because it sure seems like you could enhance that by showing how the forearms are turning the barrel. Also I am not sure if that drill creates the rearward arc we see in the MLB guys. Maybe one of Epstein's guys on this site can chime in.

This is what I was trying to say on some previous posts here and at BBF.

I think SB gets caught up on the term "opposing forces", and where the hand torque get confusing. I kind of like the description of the hands working in concert, though technically one forearm rotates the opposite way of the other.

Your right Pronk. I have motives behind it however. I use the word "ratchet" it fits better for me and it was my word just like hands and hips drive the swing.

sure, substitute "Ratchet" everywhere you see hand torque.

I know thats not a good answer, but try it and see what you draw from it.
