Step One For New Members

If you are reading this, you are in the main forum....where all the good discussion and exchange of ideas occurs.

Instructional threads are 'stickied' to the top of this forum page in an effort to get new members to see the work that gets done here. There are 5 different threads of a dad and his kid, going through the HittingIllustrated process. They are quite instructional. I think you'll be impressed with what you see. The kid's progress is amazing. One of them is now a D1 player who chose college after being drafted. Another is a DII college player. A third is his brother who is now in high school. The fourth is a current high school freshman. And the fifth is my son who is now out of college and playing amateur fastpitch softball. Take a look. The terminology is likely to confuse you at first. But do your best to understand.

Then, there is another forum titled The Second Engine, found just below this one on the main page, which consists of 18 threads that have been chosen as 'good reads' for new members to get 'up to snuff' on what is taught here.

It is my recommendation that you spend your first hour or so in that forum reading those threads. Then, come here to ask questions. We love it when clips of hitters are posted.

And here is a link to an Instructional Starter Pak. It has the basic information. There are many details that go with each step that are too cumbersome to put in the Pak.

I'LL GIVE YOU AN ANALYSIS AND A RECOMMENDATION.

If I were you, I'd concentrate on figuring out what the Hand Pivot Point and what the Rear Hip Pivot Point are....and how they are synced together to create the high level swing.

Welcome.

  • Help Needed - 13 Year Old

Hi Everyone. I have been working with my 13 year old on a problem he had for several years - Bat drag. His rear elbow would race in front of his left elbow worse than I have ever seen. He was always a solid hitter, but this year in travel ball he tanked and all stars was even worse. We worked to eliminate the issue for the past 4 weeks, but there are still some other issues I am concerned about and I do not know what are real issues and what are not and what I should address in what order. Here is a video of him from yesterday:

    https://youtu.be/8kPEI3fHgYc

    Here is what I see:

    1. Timing, he is moving his swing before front foot hits the ground.
    2. He has significant upper cut on many swings. This started once the bat drag was gone. I assume it is because he is arching his back too much.
    3. Front leg is bent when landing and then turning into place. His legs almost scissor in motion.

    Let me know your thoughts.

    Thanks in advance,
    Rob

    Greetings, welcome!

I will comment while you are waiting for someone who knows more HI material to come along. Looks like the drag is gone, curious how you did it. The strategy he used to replace the bat drag might be causing sequencing issues.

Semantics and definitions cloud discussions. Looks to me like he really doesn't "start" the swing until he drops his hands and puts his foot down. The hands-up/barrel-tilt position he goes to during leg lift gets spent by dropping the hands down and back. Hands-arms-shoulders should go to this position while front foot moves forward, not while coming up. His hands get relatively closer to his torso through the swing up to contact. Pulls the bat through as he thrusts pelvis forward and up.

    How heavy is the bat?

I have some other thoughts, but there may be more direct suggestions than mine. But he has some good stuff to work from.

Thanks so much for the reply. The way we broke his bat drag was I worked with him very slow to know where his arms should be throughout the swing. He could see if because we also did slow mo video. We would do about 200 balls on the tee with him doing his swing slow and then gradually he would speed it up. It took about 2-3 weeks but he worked through it. We also used a baseball rebellion bat drag brace, but honestly we had it already fixed by the time it arrived. Here is a picture from about a month ago that shows his swing with the bat drag:

His bat is a 31/21 which he has been swinging for the past 2 years. Thanks for the info. I did notice he is loading while his foot is coming up and not when going down. We tried working on that but it a weird change and he was struggling. We will continue to work on that. Any tips or drills would be helpful. Thank you!

The rules say Max must show a video of him or a student doing what he claims. Or get banned. Sorry.

              Rules are enforced here.

              Warning issued.
