Step One For New Members

If you are reading this, you are in the main forum....where all the good discussion and exchange of ideas occurs.

Instructional threads are 'stickied' to the top of this forum page in an effort to get new members to see the work that gets done here. There are 5 different threads of a dad and his kid, going through the HittingIllustrated process. They are quite instructional. I think you'll be impressed with what you see. The kid's progress is amazing. One of them is now a D1 player who chose college after being drafted. Another is a DII college player. A third is his brother who is now in high school. The fourth is a current high school freshman. And the fifth is my son who is now out of college and playing amateur fastpitch softball. Take a look. The terminology is likely to confuse you at first. But do your best to understand.

Then, there is another forum titled The Second Engine, found just below this one on the main page, which consists of 18 threads that have been chosen as 'good reads' for new members to get 'up to snuff' on what is taught here.

It is my recommendation that you spend your first hour or so in that forum reading those threads. Then, come here to ask questions. We love it when clips of hitters are posted.

And here is a link to an Instructional Starter Pak. It has the basic information. There are many details that go with each step that are too cumbersome to put in the Pak.

I'LL GIVE YOU AN ANALYSIS AND A RECOMMENDATION.

If I were you, I'd concentrate on figuring out what the Hand Pivot Point and what the Rear Hip Pivot Point are....and how they are synced together to create the high level swing.

Welcome.

  • Our Swings

Hi all, thought I would start a thread of swings. Mostly me, and some from my boys. Here is a link to a youtube video of me hitting some wiffles pitched by a 14u I help coach. Got jambed inside twice in this clip. Not my best swings from that round, but my college aged daughter stopped by to say hi and shot the clip.

Gotta start somewhere I guess, and you need to swing to get it. Looks terrible, but I am glad I can see it here. Boy do I have some work to do to earn the right to teach these guys.

Will do, thanks! Funny how swinging at a moving object changes focus and concentration.

Here's my younger boy hitting in a 14u tourney. He is 11u age wise, played on a weakish 12u team this year. The 14u team was short, and our 13u team was playing elsewhere so they couldn't move anyone up.

This is his first at bat, first time at 60/90. Wish I had filmed his only at bat the next day, really battled well and got the timing down. This team they were facing won the 14u AAA state tourney the weekend before.

Anyway, this is a baseline, starting point for swing changes. He has heard the information, but was having decent success at his level so I figured we would wait until off season to begin changing his mechanics.

Turn your volume down before viewing the third clip. Loud yelling.

Baseline video of my older boy. 13u this year. Not much video of him this year since I was first base coach most of the time.

Here's where my older boy is in his game swing. This was his first at bat in the wood bat fall ball league, JV division. Left gap, super dry short grass on a hot day, so it about rolled to the fence.

His suddenness has improved, and his rear elbow is launching from a better location. Better barrel path and "lasering". Still bat dragging with no coil/corner, and some other sub-optimal movement. Heading in a better direction though than previous years.

when does the barrel move forward. I see the rear ward move but do you incorporate a move to the ball also.

I see the bottom hand action that torques the barrel rearward but I'm failing to see the barrel being turned to the ball

Hi all, back again. Trying to get back into things here. Quick super cut video of my older boy. First is SnF with a wiffle bat, then a pivot feel with the elbow buddy and connection ball working on a high pitch, then an oppo dry swing. Hopefully more video to follow.

                          https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=48YY__MlD4M

The elbow buddy is being used for several purposes here. I am trying to over write his bat drag with little impulses to only pivot to contact. Told him to treat the connection ball as a weightless water balloon- don’t pop it or drop it. Used to decrease tension and create space. It’s a good forearm strengthening tool also. I will try to refine it a bit, but it has helped him see his first impulse has been dysfunctional and he is self correcting.

Dry swing is fair. Just starting to hone in on using the back and lateral tilt to launch. He loses control of the bat briefly, and dips back to accept and dissipate the force generated by the bat. My goal is to become rear leg (one-legged) to generate force, front leg accepts and braces the force, and force is dissipated by extension, shoulder turn, and wrist release. No need for crazy body and head movement, or momentum. Long way to go to get there.

First time ever he is very excited to hit in games. More of a defense guy.

Looking for feedback, comments, and counter arguments. Thanks!

Two quick cuts here, from what we did today. I showed him what Juan Soriano posted today, and the link to the GRIT video. We talked about a few things to focus on as absolutes, and did some new stuff. I like constraints. Looking for forearm pivot from a coil. Lots of push still in the stretch and fire, and unnecessary hitch in the arm initiation. Getting better. He doubled down again, said he was the most excited for baseball season he has ever been. Swing heading in right direction, and throwing harder than ever.
