  • The "Barrel/Hip X Angle"

    http://www.teachersbilliards.com/hitzone/tejada20a.mov

Watch Miquel Tejada Above. The barrel/hip X angle is a most meaningful measure of torque. Pointing the barrel to the opposite box and then turning it around in the hands, NATURALLY creates the separation that many instructors work so hard to create manually. Watch what happens to the hips as the barrel goes from pointed to the opposite field gap, to the 45 degree slot. They open and the upper body's stretch is created naturally. This barrel/hand movement provides resistance for the lower body to work against to create the stretch. And, the hands remain at the armpit area and you end up in that "launch" position that all high level hitters achieve.

Because this "position" is almost impossible to get to manually, it is equally impossible to "hold" this position, which is what many instructors try to do. They try to get you to this position "statically", hold it, then swing. That simply does not work.

The tip and rip technique will get you there for sure.

This clip of Bonds is a very good example.
